6 Pet Friendly Things To Do In Steamboat Springs

Steamboat Springs wears many hats: Ski Town U.S.A., Bike Town U.S.A., and most recently the town has been dubbed Dog Town U.S.A. by Dog Fancy Magazine. We love our pooches here in Steamboat… in fact, 50% of households have at least one dog, if not more!

Traveling with your pup can be tough. So, when it comes to taking a trip with your furry friend in tow, things can get complicated. If you’re looking to bring your pooch on a trip, Steamboat Lodging Company has you covered with advice on where to stay, play, and dine with your pup when you visit our little slice of mountain paradise. Here is a list of our six go-to activities with your fluffy best friend!

 1. Go For A Hike

Have an adventure with your pup! Steamboat is generally an on-leash town. However, there are a few designated spots where you can let your pet roam free: Spring Creek Park and Rita Valentine Park both offer off-leash areas. For a great overlook of the town, give Emerald Mountain via Blackmere Trail a try. Or go for a stroll along the Yampa River Core Trail. This seven-mile paved trail extends from one end of town to the other, with plenty of opportunities for your pup to cool off in the Yampa River. For a little more of a challenge, head north to Mica Lake via the Slavonia Trailhead in the Mt Zirkel Wilderness Area.

Remember to keep your dog on a leash and in voice command when you are out in the wilderness. Our national forests provide habitat for many wild animals, and we definitely do not want to upset them while enjoying the great outdoors. Always keeps your distance and practice proper Leave-No-Trace etiquette.

Local’s Tip: No matter where you hike, be sure to bring a leash, fresh water, and doggie bags. 🙂

 2. Take A Dip!

Cool off in Steamboat hottest spots! If your dog is a fan of water, head to one of the three lakes surrounding Steamboat Springs: Pearl Lake, Steamboat Lake, or Stagecoach State Park. Rather stay in town? Visit the Burgess Creek Beach at the base of Steamboat Ski Resort. Relax in an Adirondack chair as Fido splashes around in the water and surrounding grassy area.*

Local’s Tip: Into SUP? Pearl Lake is wakeless and ideal for those SUP and kayak pups. If you don’t have your own gear, grab a rental from Mountain Sports Kayak School or Paddleboard Adventure Company.

*NOTE: There is continuing construction at the base of Steamboat Resort, check all updates HERE.

 3. Take Your Pup On A Shopping Spree

One of the great things about Steamboat is how walkable the downtown area is. And, you can’t visit Steamboat Springs without getting a souvenir (or getting your dog a souvenir!) Outdoor K9 has everything a Colorado adventure dog could possibly need. Or zip over to Elk River Pet Ranch for some locally made treats.

Local’s Tip: When wandering around town, don’t forget to leash your pup. The City of Steamboat Springs requires all dogs be on a 6 ft lead while within city limits.

4. Get A Cold One

After a long day of adventuring with your four-legged friend, you might be thirsty. Both Storm Peak Brewing Company and Mountain Tap Brewery welcome pooches in their taproom (as long as they are on a leash.) Both breweries have food options available at nearby restaurants and food trucks.

Local’s Tip: Be sure to bring a water bowl for your pup so you can enjoy a cold one together!

5. Dine With Your Dog

Dog on restaurant patioThere are a variety of different eateries around Steamboat that have patio seating available for your pooch. Colorado state law prohibits dogs inside anywhere that serves food. However, several restaurants have outdoor options where you can tie them up next to your table. Carl’s Tavern, Salt and Lime, and Slopeside Grill are a few great options. Enjoy a Colorado bison burger or truffle fries at Back Door Grill, and maybe give your pal animal a few treats for being such a good dog today.

6. Stay In A Luxe Pet-Friendly Home

Finding the perfect pet-friendly lodging can be a challenge. Luckily, Steamboat Lodging Company has a variety of options to suite your romantic getaway or group lodging.  Check out these Pet-Friendly Homes to see where you and fido’s next adventure could be!
