Top 5 Off-Slope Activities

How To Ski Town USA™ If You Don’t Ski

To stick to our vision to inspire adventure, we have to be able to provide our guests with insights to Steamboat Springs aside from the world class ski resort. While many visit in the winter to simply “Ski the Boat”, there’s other vacationers looking to participate in winter recreation off the slopes of Steamboat Resort.

Activities ranging from all-age endeavors to tailored, one-of-a-kind experiences exist in the winter and below you’ll find detailed information on the top 5 activities we think will help spark change and complement your families vacation plans this season.

So you’ve been dreaming of Colorado bluebird skies and the prized Yampa Valley. You’re looking for a different way to experience the beauty of the outdoors and beat the winter blues.

Promising fly fishing can be found year round along the peaceful flowing tail-waters of Stagecoach Reservoir & the Yampa River.

Andy's Wife

During winter, the access roads to the Stagecoach tail-waters are closed due to snow, but a short hike or snowmobile ride will get you there with beautiful scenery along the way. The tail-waters can be reached on the west end of Stagecoach Reservoir (no motor vehicle access, hike/bike/snowmobile only) by taking CO-131 South to Co Rd 14. The most common access point on the east end of the lake (snowmobiles allowed) is reached by taking CO-131 South to Co Rd 18.

Additional fishing zones can be found in town just steps away from one of our Downtown Steamboat Vacation Rentals along the Yampa River.

Fly Fishing

If involving yourself in winter fly fishing be sure to bring warm clothing, snacks, water, and an extra set of dry clothes. The water is usually fairly low and always clear. Fishing with light fluorocarbon tippet and micro indicators and weights will be promising towards chances of connecting.

Just minutes from Downtown Steamboat, Fish Creek Falls is a beautiful, all ages hike to a gorgeous waterfall that the whole family can enjoy! In the winter these falls are frozen over, but the beauty is still full-force with snow capped mmountainsides flowing streams and if you’re lucky enough, ice climbers in the distance showing off their skills.

To get there from downtown, head north on 3rd street, taking a right on to Fish Creek Falls road.  Travel 4 miles up Fish Creek Falls road to the trailhead/parking lot which costs $5 for daily use.

Starting from the parking lot, you can walkabout left 100 steps to the scenic overlook or for the full experience, hike a moderate ¼ mile trail down to the lower falls where you’ll have exceptional views with opportunity for great family pictures!

Falls Overlook

For those feeling adventurous, rent snow shoes for $12 per day through our friends at Ski Haus and head up the trail to the right of the falls bridge for an advanced hike through picturesque landscapes.

Tread with ease over the deep snowpack for 3 miles to the upper water falls, and another 2 miles to Long Lake.
