Hocus Pocus With the Original Cast at Strings Music Pavilion

 Okay, this one is special. Strings is screening the 1993 cult classic and then bringing five original cast members onto the stage for a live conversation. Omri Katz, Vinessa Shaw, Jason Marsden, Larry Bagby, and Tobias Jelinek will be there swapping stories from the set and talking about how a Disney Halloween movie turned into an annual ritual for an entire generation.

 Now for the math. The Pavilion holds 569 seats. Steamboat has roughly 13,000 residents, and every single one of them who grew up quoting the Sanderson sisters is going to want in. Grab your tickets early. Grab your lodging at the same time. You will thank yourself in October.

Foundry Halloween 5K

When: Saturday, October 31, 2026 at 9:00 a.m.
Where: Soda Creek Elementary School, 220 Park Avenue
Cost: Around $25 to $35 depending on registration, and kids pay $1 for every year of their age

Calling this a race undersells it. The Foundry 5K closes out the Steamboat Springs Running Series season and it is really a costume party that happens to involve running. The course rolls out from Soda Creek Elementary, threads through Butcher Knife Creek, climbs gently up Spring Creek, and turns around at the pond for an easy out and back on a mix of trail and pavement.

Costumes are absolutely encouraged. Leashed dogs are welcome, and yes, dogs in costume are a highlight. When you cross the finish line there are homemade Halloween treats waiting, plus apple bobbing, face painting, and games for the kids. The whole thing benefits the Foundry Treatment Center, a local recovery program, and it is built as a sober celebration that works for every age.

Local's Tip: A 9:00 a.m. start at 6,700 feet in late October usually means frost on the grass. Pick a costume that plays nicely over a base layer, and bring something you can peel off once you warm up. The inflatable T-rex is hilarious for about four minutes.

The Downtown Halloween Stroll

When: Saturday, October 31, 2026 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Where: Lincoln Avenue, downtown Steamboat Springs

If you only do one thing all weekend, do this. The Halloween Stroll has been running since 1991 and it is hands down the best glimpse you will ever get of what makes this town tick. The city shuts down Lincoln Avenue, which is also U.S. Highway 40, and turns the whole street over to pedestrians. Shop owners, restaurant crews, bankers, and business folks set out cauldrons of candy. Fire trucks park with their ladders cranked up so kids can stare in wonder. There are fire dancers. There are drum circles. There is live music, and a kids costume contest that is every bit as competitive as it is adorable. You might spot fairies riding horses down the middle of the street. You will almost certainly get handed a shiny penny and a little friendly sass from the legendary Over the Hill Gang.

The candy is honestly just an excuse. The real main event is the people watching. Locals treat costumes like a competitive sport around here, and strolling Lincoln Avenue at dusk alongside a few thousand of your temporary neighbors is the kind of joyful, slightly weird small town magic you cannot manufacture anywhere else.

Local's Tips: get there early, park on a side street, bring a flashlight and a warm layer, and book dinner downtown afterward. Seriously, book it. The entire town eats out that night. Getting there and getting around Lincoln Avenue typically closes in the late afternoon ahead of the 5:00 p.m. start and reopens once the crowd thins out. Steamboat Springs Transit reroutes around the closure with temporary stops on the nearby numbered streets and along Yampa Street. Halloween Ball in Craig

Grownups who want something a little fancier than trick or treating, this one is for you. The Halloween Ball is a fundraiser hosted by Advocates Crisis, Trauma, and Survivor Services, the organization that provides round the clock crisis response and long term support to survivors across northwest Colorado. Expect dinner, specialty cocktails, live music, a costume contest with real stakes, and a silent auction.

Just FYI Craig sits about 42 miles west of Steamboat, roughly 45 minutes down U.S. 40, so sort out a designated driver before you go. Double check this year's date and ticket details with the organizers, since the schedule moves around from year to year.
