The snow dance worked! Mark the calendar!
Steamboat Resort is scheduled to open for the 2026/27 season on Saturday, November 21, 2026. Lifts start turning at 8:30 a.m., but the party starts an hour earlier, and if you want a free t-shirt you should be there well before that.
Opening day at Steamboat is not a soft launch. It is donuts, mimosas, a countdown, a bell, and several hundred people who have been waiting seven months for exactly this. Here is everything you need to know, and where to stay so you are not driving in from somewhere at 6:00 a.m.
Steamboat Opening Day 2026: The Details
- When: Saturday, November 21, 2026
- Festivities begin: 7:30 a.m.
- Lifts start spinning: 8:30 a.m.
- Where: Steamboat Resort, 2305 Mt. Werner Circle, Steamboat Springs, CO. See on map
- Cost: Free to attend the festivities. Lift access requires a pass or ticket.
As always, opening day is weather and snowmaking dependent, and the resort makes the final call. Watch @SteamboatResort for confirmation as the date approaches, and check the Steamboat live cameras to see the mountain filling in for yourself.
What Actually Happens on Opening Day
Steamboat runs one of the better opening day celebrations in Colorado, and most of it is free. Based on recent seasons, here is what to expect:
- Free gear for the first 100 in line. A limited-edition Opening Day tee designed by Ohana, the local Steamboat apparel and screen printing shop, plus a pair of Smartwool socks. Ohana shirts are genuinely nice, which is why people show up at 6:45 a.m. for them.
- Complimentary Powder Day Donuts, while supplies last. They do not last.
- Complimentary mimosas, because this is a resort that trademarked Champagne Powder and takes the theme seriously.
- The Champagne Powder Snow Bell countdown. The whole crowd counts down and the bell rings in the season. This is the moment worth filming.
- A donation presentation to the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, the organization that has produced an absurd number of Olympians out of a town of 13,000 people.
- On-mountain prizes stashed around the slopes. Follow @SteamboatResort on Instagram for clues and a shot at Ohana gear, Smartwool goodies, and more.
The full schedule of events typically gets released closer to the date, so check the resort's site in November for specifics.
Which Passes Work on Opening Day?
All of them. Steamboat does not blackout opening day.
- Ikon Pass and Ikon Base Pass are both valid
- Steamboat-specific season passes are valid
- Day lift tickets are available, and you should buy them in advance rather than at the window
Window pricing is always the most expensive route. Check our Steamboat lift ticket and pass deals before you buy anything.
How to Actually Get First Chair
If the free tee is the goal, here is the honest advice:
- Be in line by 7:00 a.m. Earlier if it is a bluebird forecast. The first 100 fills faster than people expect.
- Stay at the mountain. Driving in and parking on opening morning is the difference between being 40th in line and 140th.
- Sort your gear the night before. Boots, pass, goggles, gloves, all by the door. Nothing tanks a 6:45 a.m. departure like a missing glove.
- Dress for standing still. You will be outside and stationary for an hour before you ever move. That is a different clothing problem than skiing.
- Manage expectations on terrain. Early season means limited open acreage and firm, manmade surfaces. Opening day is about the party and the first turns, not about finding powder in the trees.
Our Steamboat packing guide covers the rest.
Need Gear Before Opening Day?
Reserve rentals in advance. Opening weekend is one of the busiest of the year at the shops, and pre-booking means you walk in, grab your kit, and go instead of losing an hour of your first day to a queue. See our ski and snowboard rental deals.
Already Thinking Past Opening Day? Here Is the Season
Opening day is the start of a long and very good winter in Steamboat. A few dates worth building a trip around:
- Thanksgiving week, late November 2026. Opening weekend rolls straight into the holiday, making it a natural early-season trip.
- Christmas and New Year's. Book six to nine months out. These weeks always go first.
- Cowboy Downhill, January 2027. Professional rodeo cowboys and cowgirls swap saddles for skis and take on the slopes in full western gear. It is exactly as ridiculous and wonderful as it sounds, and it is uniquely Steamboat.
- WinterWonderGrass, March 5 to 7, 2027. The 10th anniversary of the festival's Steamboat run, billed as "A Decade in the Boat." Thirty artists, four stages, and the 2026 edition sold out all three days. See our WinterWonderGrass 2027 guide.
- Strings Music Festival winter season. Live music all winter long. See our winter Strings calendar.
Where to Stay for Opening Day
The single biggest factor in whether opening morning goes well is how far you have to travel to get in line.
- Ski-in ski-out lodging means you walk out the door with boots on. No parking, no shuttle, no 6:00 a.m. drive. On opening day this is worth every dollar.
- Walk to slopes properties deliver nearly the same advantage for less.
- Mountain area rentals keep you in the base neighborhood with the widest range of sizes and prices.
- Downtown Steamboat rentals put you near Lincoln Avenue's restaurants and bars, with the free bus running to the mountain.
