Steamboat does not do a quiet winter. Between opening day and the last pond skim of spring, this town packs in cowboys on skis, hot air balloons glowing in the snow, a 114-year-old carnival that shuts down Lincoln Avenue, and a bluegrass festival celebrating a decade in the Boat.
Below is the full 2026/27 winter event calendar, in order, with dates, times, and what to actually expect. Bookmark it, plan around it, and call us when you know your dates.

Steamboat Opening Day

Holiday Balloon Glow

Four hot air balloons inflate and illuminate the base village after dark. Stroll among the standing balloons, talk to the pilots, or watch from the warmth of a slope-side table. Night skiing runs alongside it, and Timber & Torch and The Range Food & Beverage Hall are open for dinner and drinks.
Note: balloon glows are highly weather dependent and get cancelled or modified in heavy snow or wind.
Santa Saddles Up

Free
Only in a ranching town does Santa arrive on horseback. He rides in from the Torian Plum area, down the slopes and into the heart of Steamboat Square, escorted by legendary locals Bob Dapper and Dean Vogelaar.
Be early. The procession happens promptly at 1:00 p.m. and takes just a few minutes. Afterward Santa is available on the Steamboat Stage for photos, with complimentary hot chocolate.
New Year's Eve Light Up Snow Cat Parade and Fireworks

Steamboat's New Year's Eve is an early evening affair, which is excellent news if you have kids or an early flight. A Light Up Snow Cat parade kicks things off, followed by Steamboat Snow Sports Instructors performing synchronized skiing lit only by torches. Fireworks close it out over the resort to ring in 2027.
Worth knowing: December 31, 2026 is a Thursday and New Year's Day is a Friday, which makes this a natural four-day weekend. Book early.

The MusicFest at Steamboat

Six days, dozens of bands, ten venues, and the largest group ski trip in the United States. What started in 1986 as a few friends and musicians has become one of the most beloved festivals in the country, mixing Texas country, Americana, singer-songwriter sets, and acoustic shows with a full week of skiing.

Part ski race. Part rodeo. Part train wreck. And unquestionably the most Steamboat event on this entire calendar.
It started over 50 years ago when Billy Kidd, Steamboat's director of skiing, and Larry Mahan, a six-time all-around World Champion cowboy, invited a handful of ProRodeo stars up for a day of skiing. Most had never skied. They loved it anyway. Today over 100 professional rodeo cowboys tackle a dual slalom, then lasso a person and saddle a horse before crossing the finish line, capped by a mass-start stampede down Headwall.
It always coincides with the National Western Stock Show in Denver. Go watch it. You will not see anything like it anywhere else.
February 2027
114th Steamboat Winter Carnival
Tuesday, February 2 through Sunday, February 7, 2027
Howelsen Hill and Lincoln Avenue, Downtown Steamboat Springs
The oldest continuing winter carnival west of the Mississippi, running since 1914 and hosted by the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club. For six days the entire town gives itself over to it.
- Street events on Lincoln Avenue, including the famous ski jöring, where children on skis and snowboards get towed down a snow-covered main street behind horses.
- A parade featuring Steamboat's skiing high school marching band, which is the only one in the United States.
- Family events at Howelsen Hill Tuesday through Sunday.
- The Saturday Night Extravaganza, with athlete exhibitions lit by LED lights and flares, the legendary Lighted Man and his pyrotechnics, the fiery hoop, and one of the largest fireworks displays in the country.
Important: a Winter Carnival button is required to spectate or participate at events. Buttons typically go on sale around town in January, and proceeds support the Winter Sports Club. Some events need separate registration.

The biggest of the balloon glows, and the best one to plan a trip around. Hot air balloons illuminate the base village up close, and the grand finale brings fireworks and a torchlight parade together. Spectators can wander among the balloons or watch from a warm table at Timber & Torch.
Local's Tip: night skiing has a delayed opening at 6:30 p.m. that evening. Plan accordingly if you were hoping to ski under lights.
March 2027
WinterWonderGrass: A Decade in the Boat

The 14th annual WinterWonderGrass, and the 10th at Steamboat. Music, brews, mountains, love. Part music festival, part beer festival, part apres ski, part family reunion.
- 30 artists across 4 stages, three of them in heated tents
- Free Thursday kickoff celebration March 4, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the base of Steamboat Resort
- Complimentary beer and spiked seltzer tastings daily, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. for 21+

Now in its 26th year and still the best free apres in town. Bluegrass, New Orleans-style rhythm and blues, Celtic tunes, classic rock. You come off the mountain, you grab a beer, you stand in the sun in Steamboat Square and listen to a band. That is the whole pitch and it works every time.

Cardboard Classic

Homemade sleds built entirely from cardboard, glue, string, and a whole lot of questionable engineering, launched down a snow slope in a chaotic race to the bottom. Expect crashes, wild costumes, and genuine creativity. One of Steamboat's most beloved traditions and absolutely worth watching even if you are not building one.
Registration opens April 1. Start hoarding your cardboard now.
Splashdown Pond Skim

The definitive end-of-season party. Skiers and riders suit up in retro gear and outrageous costumes, then send it across an icy pond with varying degrees of speed, style, and commitment. Some make it. Most do not. All of it is entertaining.

Pricing: FREE for 26/27 Ikon Pass, Ikon Base Pass, Ikon Base Plus Pass, and Steamboat-only passholders. $30 for non-passholders, ages 5 and up. Children 4 and under complimentary.
Ride the gondola up to 9,000 feet for culinary bites, live music, a full bar, and a toast to the sunset over the Yampa Valley. One of those Steamboat activities that turns first-timers into annual returners. Fun for the whole family, kids very much included.
Two practical notes: tickets are sold onsite by credit card only with no pre-purchase, and they are separate from scenic ride tickets. Park free at the Upper Knoll lot. Pets are not permitted at Sunset Happy Hour or inside Thunderhead Lodge.
Strings Music Festival

Over three decades of programming that has featured more than 60 Grammy winners and musicians from all 25 of the nation's top orchestras, with more than 100 performances a year. The 569-seat Strings Pavilion brings world-class music into the heart of Steamboat, running holiday favorites, chart-topping artists, and national touring acts right through the winter.
