Packing for a big trip is daunting. We put it off, start the night before departure, and consequently overpack while still arriving without the things we actually need.
We like to make things easy for our guests, so here is our checklist for how to pack and what to pack for your Steamboat adventure. We want you to Play Hard and Rest Easy the moment you arrive in beautiful, snow-covered Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
Steamboat Resort runs November 21, 2026 through spring 2027, so let's get you sorted.
Four Packing Rules That Actually Matter
- Start a week out. Seven days before your trip, pick a spot in your home to lay out everything you are bringing. A guest bedroom works perfectly. Choose the luggage and carry-on you plan to use, and add to the pile as you think of things.
- Pack light. Our Steamboat vacation rentals have washers and dryers. You do not need seven of anything.
- Pack layers, not bulk. You want a base layer that wicks moisture, a mid layer that traps heat and breathes (light fleece works), and an outer layer that is windproof, breathable, and waterproof. Three thin layers beat one enormous coat every time, because you can actually regulate temperature through the day.
- Leave the dress clothes at home. Bring a few pairs of jeans, a nice sweater or fleece, and you are appropriately dressed everywhere in Steamboat, including our best restaurants. This is a ranching town. Nobody is checking.

Packing Checklist: Skiing and Snowsports
- Warm, waterproof ski jacket
- Lightweight shell or second jacket for warmer days
- Waterproof ski pants
- Snow boots with real tread
- Waterproof ski gloves or mittens
- Lightweight gloves for around town
- Ski socks (wool or synthetic, never cotton)
- Quality long underwear, top and bottom, no cotton
- Extra mid layers, fleece or synthetic
- Goggles, ideally with a spare lens for flat light
- Neck warmer or gaiter
- Sunglasses, because the Colorado sun is genuinely bright
- Ski helmet, or rent one here
- Thin hat to wear under your helmet on cold days
- Beanie or baseball cap to hide the helmet head afterward
- Sunscreen
- SPF lip balm
- Hand and foot warmers
- The kitchen sink. Just kidding. Leave that.
Packing Checklist: Apres Ski and Around Town
- Swimsuit for the hot tub, the pool, or the hot springs
- Flip flops or sandals for the same
- Jeans for dinner
- Sweater or fleece
- Comfortable apres boots, something you can walk on snowy sidewalks in
- Slippers or cozy socks for the condo
- Refillable water bottle
- Phone chargers and a portable battery (cold drains batteries fast)
- That book you have been meaning to read. We have a fireplace waiting for you.
What You Can Leave At Home
Checked bag fees are real and ski bags are awkward. A few things genuinely not worth hauling:
- Skis, boards, boots, and poles. Renting here usually costs less than checking bags both directions, and you get freshly tuned gear fitted properly. Reserve ahead through our ski and snowboard rental deals and skip the first-morning line entirely.
- Helmets. Included with most rental packages.
- Towels. Our properties have them. Just bring the swimsuit.
- Most toiletries. There are grocery stores here.
- Formal wear. Truly. Nowhere in Steamboat requires it.

Ski Haus

About two miles from the resort, and the value pick for demos. They run a shuttle between the mountain and the shop, so they can collect you, swap your skis mid-day, and drop you back at your condo. Genuinely excellent boot fitting. .
Fleischer Sport
2250 Apres Ski Way | (970) 870-0900 | Daily 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Right at the mountain base and open at 7:30 a.m., which is exactly when you need it on a first-chair morning. Happy to swap skis, add boots mid-trip, and sort out varying ability levels within one group. There is a bar in the shop, which tells you everything about how apres works here.
Steamboat Ski & Bike Kare

Downtown, with a second location up in Steamboat Village for swaps and adjustments. Strong on boot fitting.
Local's Tip: first ski trip, or you live somewhere that does not require owning warm clothes? Ski Haus rents winter outerwear too, not just skis. No need to buy a jacket you will wear once.
Three Steamboat Realities to Pack For
Altitude
Steamboat town sits around 6,900 feet and the mountain tops out above 10,500. Most visitors feel it. Start hydrating the day before you travel, go easy on alcohol the first night, and plan a lighter first day. You will get more total skiing across the week that way.
Sun
High elevation plus snow reflection is a serious combination, and a January sunburn is entirely achievable. Sunscreen and SPF lip balm every day, cloudy ones included. Reapply at lunch. Goggles or sunglasses whenever you are outside.
Wet Gear
The single best thing you can do for day two is give everything a full night to dry. Boot dryers, a warm bathroom floor, a rack near the fireplace. Damp gloves ruin a morning faster than cold temperatures do. Pack a second pair of gloves and extra socks for exactly this reason.
Do Not Forget the Swimsuit
Seriously. Steamboat is a hot springs town and this is the item people most often leave behind.
Old Town Hot Springs

Right downtown, family friendly, with multiple pools, waterslides, a climbing wall, and a fitness center. Suit and towel rentals available if you did forget. Keep your receipt and you can come and go all day.
Strawberry Park Natural Hot Springs
44200 County Road 36 | (970) 879-0342 | Sunday to Thursday 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Natural stone pools built into the mountainside about seven miles out of town, surrounded by pines with a creek running alongside. The more spectacular of the two. Reservations are required, four wheel drive is strongly recommended in winter, and bring cash for entry. Check their current requirements before you go.
And of course, many of our properties have their own hot tub, which after a day on the mountain is the correct final stop of any Steamboat day.
