Winter 2026 Strings Music Calendar

Winter 2026 Strings Music Calendar

Steamboat has a reputation as a ski town, which is fair, and a slightly quieter reputation as a genuinely great live music town, which is underrated.

Between an award-winning 569-seat concert hall, a six-day festival that doubles as the largest group ski trip in the country, a bluegrass festival in a parking lot at the base of the mountain, and free concerts in Steamboat Square every spring weekend, you could plan an entire trip around what is playing.

Here is everything happening this ski season, from November 21 opening day through spring.

Strings Music Pavilion: Steamboat's Premier Venue

900 Strings Road, Steamboat Springs
Box Office: (970) 879-5056, ext. 105
Website: stringsmusicfestival.com

Now in its 38th year, Strings Music Festival is Steamboat's premier live music presenter. The award-winning Pavilion seats just 569 people and hosts more than 60 performances a year across classical, contemporary, comedy, and family programming.

The magic is the size. In a room that small there is no bad seat, and performers routinely talk to the audience between songs in a way they simply cannot in an arena. Strings has hosted more than 100 Grammy winners and musicians from the nation's top orchestras, and it is a four-star rated charity that puts over 60 percent of its programming out free to the community, including school programs reaching more than 3,500 local students a year.

Confirmed Winter Shows

  • Steamboat Symphony Orchestra presents A Mountain Holiday: Songs We Share

The holiday concert Steamboat turns out for every year.
  • Neal Francis
    Wednesday, December 30, 2026, 7:00 p.m.
Chicago-born piano-driven soul, funk, and rock. A terrific between-the-holidays show.
  • Maria Bamford
    Friday, January 15, 2027, 7:00 p.m.
One of the most original and genuinely beloved comedians working. In a 569-seat room, this is a special one.
  • Andy Falco + Travis Book Play Jerry
    Sunday, February 28, 2027, 7:00 p.m.
Two members of The Infamous Stringdusters taking on the Jerry Garcia songbook. Exactly the kind of show Steamboat shows up for.

More is coming. Strings typically announces the bulk of its winter lineup in October, with tickets going on sale shortly after. Check their upcoming programs page for the latest, and see our full Strings events calendar for the year-round schedule.

Still on sale for fall, if you are arriving before the lifts spin: Thunderstruck classic rock tribute on October 24, and a Hocus Pocus screening with cast members Omri Katz, Vinessa Shaw, Jason Marsden, Larry Bagby, and Tobias Jelinek on October 30.

The MusicFest at Steamboat

January 5 to 10, 2027
Steamboat Resort and venues around town
themusicfest.com

Six days, dozens of bands, ten venues, and the largest group ski trip in the United States. What started in 1986 as a handful of friends and musicians has become one of the most beloved festivals in the country, running Texas country, Americana, singer-songwriter sets, and acoustic shows alongside a full week of skiing.

The format is the appeal: ski all day, then move between venues all night. If you have been to MusicFest once, you already know whether you are going again.

Book lodging early. MusicFest week fills Steamboat faster than almost anything else on the calendar.

WinterWonderGrass: A Decade in the Boat

March 5 to 7, 2027 (free kickoff Thursday, March 4)
Upper Knoll, Steamboat Resort

The 14th annual WinterWonderGrass and the 10th at Steamboat. Thirty artists across four stages, three of them inside heated tents, with complimentary beer and spiked seltzer tastings daily from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. for guests 21 and over.

Past Steamboat editions have brought Billy Strings, Trampled by Turtles, Greensky Bluegrass, Leftover Salmon, The Infamous Stringdusters, and Molly Tuttle to a parking lot at the base of the mountain, which is a sentence that should not work and absolutely does.

The 2026 festival sold out all three days. The 2027 lineup announcement lands October 6, 2026, with tickets on sale in October. Full details in our WinterWonderGrass 2027 guide.

Do not miss Grass After Dark, the late-night shows at venues around town after the main stages close. Separate tickets, 21 and over, and frequently the best sets of the weekend.

Now in its 26th year and still the best free apres in Colorado. Bluegrass, New Orleans rhythm and blues, Celtic, classic rock. You come off the mountain, grab a beer, and stand in the spring sun in Steamboat Square listening to a band. That is the entire pitch and it works every single time.

Music and Comedy at 9,000 Feet

Steamboat runs two evening programs at Thunderhead Lodge, reached by riding the gondola up after the lifts close. Both are worth the trip for the setting alone.

Sunset Happy Hour brings live music, culinary bites, and a full bar, with a toast to the sunset over the Yampa Valley. Free for '26/27 Ikon, Ikon Base, Ikon Base Plus, and Steamboat-only passholders, $30 for everyone else ages 5 and up. Tickets sold onsite by credit card only.

Saturday Comedy Nights pair a live music opener with a full stand-up set from a featured comedian, plus a full bar and light appetizers. Tickets and lineup at steamboatcomedy.com. Dates for '26/27 had not been posted at publication.

Live Music Around Town

Beyond the big venues, Steamboat's bars and restaurants keep music going all winter. A few reliable spots:

  • Aurum on Yampa Street runs live music in the bar and one of the better happy hours in town.
  • Schmiggity's is the late-night live music and dance institution downtown.
  • The Commons food hall hosts free live music some evenings, which pairs well with the fact that your group can order six different things.
  • Grass After Dark venues during WinterWonderGrass weekend turn half of downtown into a music crawl.

See our 15 best restaurants guide for where to eat before any of it.

Planning Around the Music

  • Shows start at 7:00 p.m. at Strings, which means a full ski day first with time to change and eat. The Pavilion is minutes from downtown, so dinner on Yampa Street then a concert is an easy evening.
  • Buy Strings tickets early. A 569-seat room sells out, and the big names go first.
  • Book lodging before lineups drop. For MusicFest and WinterWonderGrass especially, rooms disappear within days of an announcement. Tickets you can sort later.
  • Use the free bus. Steamboat's transit connects downtown and the mountain, which matters on nights involving a drink.

Where to Stay

On your next visit to the 'Boat, stay with Steamboat Lodging Company. Our collection spans homes, condos, and townhomes across town, so there is something for a couple in for a single show and something for a group of ten coming in for a whole festival weekend.
