The holiday spirit runs strong in our snowy mountain town, and December is one of the best times of year to be here: take in the sights, play in the snow, and simply unwind from the long year behind you. With festive lights strung up and down the main streets and scattered throughout town, the whole place turns into a holiday village.
It is abundantly clear why locals get swept up in it, and why so many visitors choose to spend their holiday season here too. Steamboat Resort opens Saturday, November 21, 2026, which means the mountain is running well before the decorations go up.

Last-Minute Holiday Shopping Downtown
No matter how organized you are, there is always a little last-minute Christmas shopping. Take the free bus downtown, walk Lincoln Avenue, and enjoy the window displays. When a place calls to you, wander in.
With downtown decked out in colorful lights and decorations, your Christmas spirit will slide right back into place on a simple walk about. Steamboat is home to a genuinely varied mix of independent shops and galleries, so there is something for everyone on the list.
Holiday Balloon Glow

The unofficial start of the holiday season at the mountain. Four hot air balloons inflate and illuminate the base village after dark. Stroll among the standing balloons, talk to the pilots, or watch from the warmth of a slope-side table. Night skiing runs alongside it, and Timber & Torch and The Range Food & Beverage Hall are both open for dinner and drinks.
Please note: balloon glows are highly weather dependent and get cancelled or modified in heavy snow or wind.
Santa Saddles Up

Only in a ranching town does Santa arrive on horseback. Steamboat brings back the Santa Horseback Procession, with Santa riding in from the Torian Plum area, down the slopes, and into the heart of Steamboat Square, escorted by legendary locals Bob Dapper and Dean Vogelaar.
Be early. The ride happens promptly at 1:00 p.m. and takes just a few minutes. Immediately afterward Santa is available on the Steamboat Stage for visits and photos, with complimentary hot chocolate.

Price: FREE for '26/27 Ikon Pass, Ikon Base Pass, Ikon Base Plus Pass, and Steamboat-only passholders. $30 for non-passholders, ages 5 and up. Children 4 and under complimentary.
A can't-miss Steamboat activity and one that brings people back year after year. Ride the gondola up to Thunderhead Lodge for culinary bites, live music, a full bar, and a toast to the sunset over the Yampa Valley. Fun for the whole family, kids included.
Two practical notes: tickets are sold onsite by credit card only with no pre-purchase, and they are separate from scenic ride tickets. Park free at the Upper Knoll lot. Pets are not permitted at Sunset Happy Hour or inside Thunderhead Lodge.
New Year's Eve Light Up Snow Cat Parade and Fireworks

Celebrate the new year Steamboat style. The evening kicks off with a Light Up Snow Cat parade, followed by Steamboat Snow Sports Instructors performing synchronized skiing illuminated only by torchlight. At the conclusion of the parade, fireworks light up the sky over the resort to ring in 2027.
Worth knowing: the whole thing wraps by 6:00 p.m., which is genuinely excellent news if you have kids. They get the full spectacle and are still in bed on time.
Also worth knowing: December 31, 2026 falls on a Thursday and New Year's Day is a Friday, making this a natural four-day weekend. Lodging for that stretch books out early every year, and a Thursday New Year's makes it tighter than usual.
The MusicFest at Steamboat

What began in 1986 as a humble gathering of friends and musicians has grown into one of the most iconic and beloved music festivals in the country, and the largest group ski trip in the USA. Texas country, Americana, singer-songwriter sets, and acoustic shows, all paired with a full week of skiing.

52nd Annual Busch Light Cowboy Downhill

Part ski race. Part rodeo. Part train wreck. And the single most Steamboat thing on this entire calendar.
It began over 50 years ago when Billy Kidd, Steamboat's director of skiing, and Larry Mahan, a six-time all-around World Champion cowboy, invited a few ProRodeo stars up for a day of skiing. Most had never skied. They had such a good time it became an annual tradition, and today over 100 of the best professional rodeo cowboys compete in the most unique ski rodeo in the country.
The Cowboy Downhill is always scheduled to coincide with the National Western Stock Show in Denver.
Still to Be Announced
Several holiday favorites have not yet posted their 2026/27 dates. The resort typically confirms these through the fall, so watch the Steamboat app and @SteamboatResort on Instagram:
- Holiday Drone Show at Steamboat Square, typically a 30 minute evening show in mid-to-late December, followed by a skate party and night skiing.
- Holiday Skate Party at Skeeter's Rink at the base of the resort, with holiday tunes and a lights display.
- Hanukkah Lighting on the Steamboat Stage, hosted with Har Mishpacha: The Jewish Congregation of Steamboat. Song, jelly donuts, and the lighting of the menorah. Everyone welcome, Jewish or not.
- Saturday Comedy Nights at Thunderhead Lodge. Ride the gondola up for live music followed by a full stand-up set at 9,000 feet, with a full bar and light appetizers. Tickets and lineup at steamboatcomedy.com.
- New Year's Eve at Thunderhead Lodge. Recent years have featured a "Dress to Impress" masquerade party with live DJs, small bites, a drink ticket, and a champagne toast at midnight. 21 and over.
Staying Past the Holidays? Here Is What's Next
- 114th Steamboat Winter Carnival, February 2 to 7, 2027. The oldest continuing winter carnival west of the Mississippi. Ski jöring down Lincoln Avenue, the only skiing high school marching band in the country, the Lighted Man, and one of the largest fireworks displays anywhere.
- Light Up The Night, February 13, 2027. Balloon glow, fireworks, and a torchlight parade.
- WinterWonderGrass, March 5 to 7, 2027. The 10th anniversary of the festival's Steamboat run. The 2026 edition sold out all three days.
